I dag har jeg været henne på den anden skole, hvor jeg skal undervise! Det er en Secondary School med teenagere. I morges kl.6.30 stod jeg op, lavede havregrød til mig selv og fik med besvær cyklen ud af haven (havelågen var både svær at åbne, samtidig med at hundene kæmpede for at komme ud). Da jeg endelig var kommet ud, fandt jeg ud af, at jeg havde glemt projektoren, så den løb jeg ind efter. Da jeg begyndte at cykle, fandt jeg ud af, at hjulet selvfølgelig var punkteret, og da det ville være for bøvlet at sætte cyklen tilbage bag havelågen, prøvede jeg at reparerer den selv. Uden held endte det med, at jeg i stedet for fik cyklen ind i haven igen, uden hundene kom ud, men da hang mit hår og nederdel fast i lågen. Great! Jeg stressede ind til Therese og Amanda, der lå og sov og fik så lov til at låne Amandas cykel. Turen op til skolen gik derfor RET hurtigt i forhold til, at gearene ikke virkede. Der var virkelig bakket, og sommetider kørte man nærmest på rent sand! Da jeg ankom, snakkede jeg lidt med inspektøren, som under vores samtale hørte højt skrattende musik på sin mobil (typisk afrikanere). Han viste mig lidt rundt og forklarede, at tanzanianske elever ikke respekterede læreren, hvis ikke der var afstrafning. Der sagde jeg ham dog imod og fortalte, at man altså godt kunne undervise uden at slå – men det mente han ikke gjaldt afrikanske elever. Han troede, jeg skulle være på skolen et par år, hvilket viser hvor LIDT styr på tingene, der er. Til skolens ”morgensamling” blev jeg præsenteret foran alle 435 elever og sagde, at jeg glædede mig til at møde dem. Det hele virkede som en slavelejr, da de skulle adlyde lærerens ordre og stampe i jorden i takt. Næsten alle lærerne gik rundt med en bambuspind. Da de skulle fordeles ud i klasserne, så jeg nogle børn blive afstraffet med pinden på måsen eller fingrene. Det var så trist, at jeg begyndte at afsky lærerne, men sådan fungerer det her.
Jeg fik at vide, jeg ikke skulle undervise i dag, da der ville være eksamen de næste par dage, men jeg var derfor med til at holde roen under en skriftlig eksamen i en klasse á 63 elever (meget blandet aldersgruppe). Dog var det uretfærdige forhold, da prøven for det første var om biologi på engelsk, og ingen kunne rigtigt forstå sproget. For det andet sad nogle elever helt henne ved døren, som knirkede ekstremt, og lærerne kom ind og ud hele tiden uden at tage hensyn. For det tredje brugte læreren en elevs bord som skrivebord, imens eleven sad til eksamen – og bordene er sørme små nok i forvejen! Nogle gange var jeg den eneste, der skulle holde styr på dem, og når jeg så fik øjenkontakt med nogle, sendte jeg et medfølende smil, så de smilte over hele fem-øren. Dejligt! Jeg så også nogle prøve at vise hinanden svarene og havde næsten ikke lyst til at stoppe dem, da de jo fik tæsk for dårlige karakterer, men jeg stoppede dem dog efter et stykke tid. I frikvarteret ville rigtig mange teenagere gerne lege med mig. Mange rørte mit hår og ville holde mig i hånden osv.
Da jeg tog min lille bløde bold frem, lød der en stor jubel og vi legede smørklat og andre små lege. I frikvarteret kom inspektøren også gående forbi, imens jeg sad og legede med pigerne – jeg håber virkelig ikke, han vil fortælle mig, jeg som lærer ikke burde omgås eleverne på den måde. Faktisk spurgte han om mit mobilnr. Og adresse og sagde, at han ville hente mig om 16 timer (måske mente han kl.16?), så han ville vise mig sit hjem. (what? – hvad ville han? Jeg blev mega nervøs ved tanken og forstod ikke, hvad jeg skulle). Da jeg kom hjem, fortalte jeg Amanda og Therese dagens strabadser, og de sagde heldigvis, de ville tage med mig, hvis han kom ”for real”, men han kom aldrig. Om eftermiddagen spillede vi fjols med gadedrengene, hvilket var hyggeligt, men de forstod ikke en brik af reglerne og endte enten med 2 eller mange kort. Så spillede vi krig, hvilket til gengæld var en succes! Det var vildt at se, hvor muskuløse drengene var og se tøjet, de gik i. Nogle gik i lidt pigetøj, mens andre gik i alt for store bukser, og nogle gik i moderne tøj. Tænk at de ikke ejer noget som helst, imens vi ejer ”alt”! Da de tog af sted fra haven, slæbte de enten en spand eller sæk med dem, som var deres eneste ejendele. Vi har fået at vide, vi ikke må give gaver eller penge til folk, da de så generaliserer om hvide og ikke kan stoppe tiggeriet, men man havde virkelig lyst!
Teaching
Now I have tried to teach! The two first days I taught some adults in computer who were becoming priests. They could almost nothing and I found out that only 1 out of 7 computers was working! Great! Well, in the first priest class there were 13 students, so it was a bit hectic, but I tried to read some Swahili to them about computers (I didn’t understand it myself). Then I showed them some things on my computer which they also tried when I sent my computer around to everybody. In the end of the class I made a little test to find out how much they understood, and actually there were some of them who still didn’t understand much. Technology is so strange to them. Luckily a few students understood a bit of English so they became my translators. My second class had never used a computer before so there was a lot to tell them even before we turned on the computer. At first I let them all try to click on the mouse without combining it to a computer which was a bit hilarious. Then I showed them how to move the mouse on the screen. While they did it everybody was totally quiet and amazed! It took though a veeery long time to move the mouse from one point to another! When they should multitask I had to PRESS their finger down on “shift” while their other finger hit another button.
The day after I taught the real priests (the highest level) but there were no reason to worry about their level because they could just as much as the other classes! It was fun to teach the classes but at the same time a bit strange because they were so much older than me.
Today I went to a Secondary School where I met the inspector. I had some problems getting there in time because I first had to get my bike out of our garden gate (there were 2 annoying dogs who eagerly tried to get out). When I finally got out I found out I had forgotten my projector. Well I had to get in again (I was a bit worried to leave my bike at the street though). After I had ridden my bike a few meters I found out that the tyre was punctured! I tried to repair it so I didn’t have to get back into the garden with the dogs but without success. I HAD to get back in again. My bike fell down while I was stuck in the gate with my hair and my skirt. Great! I hurried into the house to borrow a bike from Amanda so I could get to the school in time. When I met the inspector he heard loud scratching music on his mobile so I couldn’t hear much of what he said. Then he presented me in front of the whole school (435 students who were acting as if they were slaves). The teachers walked around with sticks to hit the kids… horrible! I saw a boy who got hit at his bottom. I felt so sorry for him. The inspector told me that African students didn’t respect the teacher if there were no punishment but I disagreed. He asked for my mobile number and my address because he wanted to invite me to his house in 16 hours! (what? I didn’t even know him! And did he mean 6 hours? Or at 16.00? I didn’t know but when I got home to Amanda and Therese they told me that they would join me if he came for real. Luckily he didn’t come).
Today I had no classes but instead I was walking around some students who had an exam to make them be quiet. I saw some students help each other and it took me a while before I stopped them because I knew that they would get beaten if they had bad marks. Everything was written in English and they didn’t understand anything (I couldn’t even understand it) so it really must have been tough.
At lunch time I played with the teenagers - that was fun! They loved to touch my hair! While I was sitting with some girls the inspector walked past and starred at me. (I really don’t hope he will tell me not to hang out with the students!). Well it had been a VERY eventful day even though I did not teach.
